Trains during day only in Haflong section

Silchar: The Northeast Frontier Railway has decided to operate passenger trains only during daytime in the New Haflong-Ditockcherra section during the monsoon. This is the diversion part of the 210-km Lumding-Silchar section.

Trains will run in this section at a moderately less speed. However, the authorities are yet to announce the date for starting passenger trains in the newly-constructed broad gauge section, where freight trains have been running regularly since March 31 after a six-month-long mega block was lifted.

A decision was taken regarding operating trains in the section after sunset once the monsoon is over in a meeting held by the NF railways general manager at Maligaon last week. An assessment on maintenance of tracks will be made beforehand. The scheduling will be done keeping sufficient time gap between two trains so that they do not get stranded in the hill section. In compliance with the report of Commissioner Railway Safety, engineers will give a list of locations, which face the threat of landslides and subsidence, for construction of NFR department.

Besides routine patrolling, these spots will require intensive observation by a unit of trackmen. Besides this, from the point of security of passengers, each department of NFR will review provisions in the guidelines regarding rescue and relief of passengers in case of emergencies like derailment, fire in the tunnels and suggest necessary changes.
