Possible widespread impacts of Dibang, Lohit, Tipaimukh and Lower Subansi Dams were highlighted at a press meet organized by NEDF here at Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak.
Jiten Yumnam of NEDF,Manipur, PBM Basoiowmoit of Meghalaya, Ricken of Arunachal Pradesh, Anthony Debbarma of Tripura, Humtsoe of Nagaland and Vanlal Ruata of Mizoram were present at the press meet.
Representatives of the six States were concerned that India is planning to construct more than 200 dams across NE region while calling it an aggressive plan and demanding the Centre that it should stop construction of mega dams all across the NE.
The 2000 MW Lower Subansi Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project, the 2700 MW Lower Demwe HEP Project, the 300 MW Lower Siang HEP Project will lead to widespread impacts in both upstream and downstream areas of both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the said.
They said the 1200 MW Teesta HEP Project, the 1500 MW Tipaimukh Multipurpose Hydroelectric Prjest have been pursued by ignoring the concerns of raised by affected communities.
The Union Ministry of Environment & Forest conceded fraudulent "Environment and Forest Clearances" for these mega dams based on faulty information furnished by dam building companies, they alleged.
The plan to build these dams will need to complete destruction of the rich biodiversity of the NE region besides displacing several thousands of indigenous peoples across the region, they said.
