Hojai accuses Thaosen of graft

Niranjan Hojai and Debojit Thaosen
Haflong, Feb. 23: Niranjan Hojai, a member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, has lodged an FIR against the council's chief executive member Debojit Thaosen and another council member Devojit Bathari alias David for alleged misappropriation of government funds.
The development follows Dima Hasao Congress Committee's accusation that Hojai tried to topple the Congress-led executive committee of the council at the behest of BJP.
Speaking to a section of reporters last evening, Hojai said he had lodged an FIR at Haflong police station last Friday. The FIR accuses Thaosen and Bathari of misappropriating public money by forming illegal syndicates and cheating people. Hojai is the former "commander-in-chief" of the Joel Gorlosa-led faction of the militant Dima Halam Daogah. Bathari is also a former leader of the DHD (J).
In the FIR, Hojai has accused Thaosen and Bathari of running an illegal sand syndicate by collecting Rs 200 on every cubic metre in addition to Rs 150 shown as the council rate, thereby collecting Rs 350 per cubic metre. He accused the duo of extorting crores from the public.
He alleged that Rs 2 crore was misappropriated in a work of black topping the road from Lunkuk to Diyung (approximately 2km) in Dima Hasao district in the name of Arunday Construction Pvt Ltd (Korien Project).
He alleged that Thaosen and Bathari, rather than blacklisting Hills Trade Company for not completing the roadwork from Haflong Tinali to Dihangi, which cost around Rs 26 crore, within the stipulated date of March 31, 2014, continued to work with them.
During the construction carried out at Dalmia cement plant at Umrangsho, the council received Rs 69 lakh as royalty for supply of sand and boulder chips, whereas the actual rate was Rs 14 crore. He alleged Thaosen took crores from the company.
Hojai alleged that Thaosen has 10 per cent share in every scheme, supply and contract in all the departments under NC Hills Autonomous Council and has acquired benami properties in the name of his workers. He told The Telegraph: "I am not going to spare the people who are misappropriating government money in Dima Hasao. I will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Rajnath Singh to look into the matter."
Thaosen denied the allegations and challenged Hojai to prove his claims. "I will resign if the charges framed against me are proved," he said.
On the basis of Hojai's complaint, Haflong police have registered a case.
