Ozone Group, an established player in the pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare segment, is the lead promoter of the food park, which is run by the North East Mega Food Park Limited, with a 48 per cent stake. The park will have 27 food processing units with collective investment of Rs 250 crore and will eventually lead to an annual turnover of Rs 400-500 crore.
The other promoters are Assam Industrial Development Corporation Limited (24 per cent), LMJ International Limited (22 per cent), Rajsekhar Constructions Private Limited (five per cent) and Assam Small Industries Development Corporation Limited (one per cent).
The 50-acre park is coming up at Nathkuchi in Nalbari and construction work started two years back.
Six units have confirmed participation in the food park.
Director (operations) A.K. Absar Hazarika today said the park would establish direct links from the farm to processing and on to the consumer markets. “Efficient logistical facilities will connect the collection centres to the primary processing centres, which, in turn, will be connected to a central processing centre,” he said.
He said 100 tonnes of fruits would be required daily for the project. Arrangements have been made to get Assam lemon, which is being grown on 800 acres in Baksa district.
In terms of its contribution to the national production, the region accounts for about 5.1 per cent (fruits) and 4.5 per cent for vegetables.
Chairman and managing director of North East Mega Food Park Limited S.C. Sehgal said the park would not only create a platform for the farmers to take their produce under one roof for collection, but also for the food processing industry for processing the produce.
He said preference would be given to local investors. The industry will get subsidy on investments in terms of income tax benefits as well as power charges and others. Total subsidies to the tune of Rs 4 crore can be availed of.
