Industry minister encourages investment in Manipur

IMPHAL, Apr 28 : Industry minister Y Erabot and his cabinet colleague holding tourism portfolio TN Haokip have urged investors to set up business units in the state in sectors like tourism, agriculture, horticulture, mineral resources, IT, power, fisheries and health services.

Addressing a seminar on Investment opportunity in Manipur' on Wednesday, Erabot highlighted certain projects taken up by the government at Moreh town, bordering Myanmar, to accelerate the ongoing commercial activities between the two countries.

Moreh, the gateway of Southeast Asia and a focal point of the coutnry's Look East Policy' transects around Rs five crores on a daily basis in the trans-border trading activities.

The minister said construction of an integrated check post is underway, while a multi-storied market complex was being set up for which the foundation had already been laid. He urged the investors to take their business opportunities at the Food Park at Nilkhthi in greater Imphal, where facilities like power supply and cold storage were available.

Tourism minister Haokips, while emphasizing the need to set up hotels in Manipur, said land would be available to investors at affordable rate.

He also highlighted the government's plan to set up a 100-acre Buddish council complex at Thoubal district.

Taking into account the volatile law and order situation gripping Manipur, a key reason for investors to turn down offers of business in the state, Haokip said the government would provide adequate security for them.

Referring to projects like IT park at Mantripukhri, the food park, expansion of Imphal airport from where 12 flights are currently being operated on daily basis and the construction of rail link between Jiribam sub-division and Imphal whose project would be extended up to Moreh, Manipur chief secretary DS Poonia urged investors to take their business opportunities in the state.

During the seminar-cum-investors' meet, organized jointly by DoNER ministry and Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the investors along with the government officials belonging to various departments, held interactions to study the feasibilities for setting up more business units.

ICC's North East Initiative advisor Nakib Ahmed, said the organization was bridging the gap between the investors and the government departments concerned to set up business units for overall development of the country and the northeast in particular.
