Assam education minister Sarat Borkataky, who toured the college, has expressed shock on this.
"I am surprised that a college is functioning with a shortage of almost 50 per cent of its teaching staff. I had a discussion with the authorities last evening and I will take up the matter with the chief minister (Tarun Gogoi)," he said.
Haflong Government College has always faced staff crunch. At present, 29 teachers' posts of the 69 sanctioned are lying vacant. Certain honours courses in some subjects cannot be continued from the next academic session because of the shortage of teachers.
Established in 1962, the college completed its 53rd years of existence in September last year.
Principal Mizanur Rahman said, "Enrolment of students has increased since 2012. But the college is suffering because of shortage of teaching staff."
Borkataky laid the foundation stone of a proposed Siksha Bhawan on the premises of the office of the deputy-inspector of school.
The minister also attended a public meeting at the District Library auditorium here where he promised all help to upgrade the education system in the district.
He saud he would take steps to provincialise the ad hoc high schools in the district.
