'Manipur woman nabbed in drug ring worked in NGO for Myanmarese refugees'

PATIALA: Investigations into the recently-busted international drug racket have revealed that the arrested woman, Cerboih alias Cherry, a resident of Manipur, was also part for an NGO "Food" that worked to register children born in Myanmarese refugee camps in Delhi.

Police said she was married to one Vanlanhriata, an operative working for the CID wing of Mizoram police, who had died due to heroin addiction. Cerboih had prepared a fake voter ID card, PAN card and driving license in the name of Cherry, said Patiala inspector general of police Paramjit Singh Gill in a press statement released on Wednesday.

Police claimed that she was part of a group of five Chennai-based drug smugglers, who were nabbed on June 30. Over five lakh tablets of pseudoephedrine weighing 200 kg were seized on Wednesday from a rented godown in Harsh Matar, Vidya Nagar, Delhi on the disclosure of Cerboih, Gill said.

"Investigations have revealed that Cerboih was working as an important link in the supply chain for Burmese and Malaysian ?end recipients'. She was in touch with Walte, a Myanmarese ?end recipient' and also with members of the Chennai-based group. The Malaysia-based druglords controlled the activities of the trafficking cartel in a tight manner and organized the entire travel arrangements of all important operatives in a secretive manner," he added.

He said that drugs were smuggled out of Himachal Pradesh through rail route, and the Chennai module would further ship the narcotic consignments to "end recipients" in Malaysia. "Another supply chain diverted narcotic substances from Himachal Pradesh through Delhi, before providing it to ?end recipients' in Myanmar. The Myanmarese and Malaysian ?end recipients' would, in turn, send the consignments to European countries," Gill said.

Important operatives of the cartel were shadowed and kept under surveillance by the Malaysia-based druglords who were the "end recipients" of narcotic consignments, he added.
