Nehginpao Kipgen, a political scientist and general secretary of the U.S.-based Kuki International Forum (KIF), wrapped up over a month-long trip to Northeast India and Northwest Myanmar.

During his visit, Kipgen interacted with various civil society groups, social organizations, students and researchers on issues such as education, socio-economic and politics. He conducted seminars/interactive sessions in Tamu Township in Myanmar, and in the states of Manipur, Meghalaya and Assam in India.

The political scientist presented a paper titled “Ethnicity in Myanmar and Its Importance to the Success of Democracy” at the international conference organized by Manipur University on May 8. The paper has been accepted by Routledge (Taylor & Francis) for publication in the United Kingdom. He also held interactive session with post-graduate students and research scholars of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, on June 5.

Besides seminars and interactive sessions, the young scholar gave interviews with Manipur state daily newspapers, All India Radio, and television programs.

Kipgen, who began his trip in Imphal (Manipur state capital) on May 3, concluded in Guwahati (Assam state) on June 9 as a resource person at a seminar themed “Democratic Transition and Kuki Society.”

Kipgen thanked the people of the region for their love, support and hospitality. Kipgen, who was born in Myanmar and spent years in India, immigrated to the United States of America in 2002 with a scholarship program funded by the State Department.
