Police said a group of five to six armed men entered the unit at Kalachand, 60km from Haflong, the headquarters of Dima Hasao district, late on Tuesday night. The suspected militants whisked away Maleswar Rao (36), the manager, at gun-point and disappeared into the nearby forest.
Soon after the incident, police from both Haflong and Maibang rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. However, the manager remained untraceable till Wednesday afternoon. Sources said the abductors have demanded Rs 6 crore as ransom to secure Rao's release.
A newly floated militant outfit, Dima Hasao National Army (DHNA), is suspected to be behind the abduction. The outfit is engaged into extortion activities across the hill district.
The kidnapping of the manager has triggered fresh fears in the district which is by and large free from militant activities for the last couple of years following surrender of major militant outfits in the once-troubled district.
