Man held with Tockay Gecko

Imphal, Jun 27 : Based on information regarding the transportation of banned wildlife products, troops of the 24 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector AR under the aegis of Hqs IGAR (S) established a vehicle check post at Khudengthabi and apprehended two smugglers yesterday.

The suspicious vehicle, a blue coloured Maruti Van Registration Number MN-01S-5739, travelling from Moreh to Imphal was stopped for checking, resulting in the apprehension of two individual.

One Tokay Gecko measuring 14 inches and costing approx Rs 40 lakhs was recovered from the apprehendees.

Tokay Gecko is a nocturnal arboreal Gecko ranging from Northeast, India, Bhutan, Nepal and South East Asia.

This species has great medicinal values.

The apprehendees were identified as Tonrengkhup Kom (26) s/o Late Alin Kom of Lukhumbi village in Churachandpur district.

The apprehendees along with the recovered Tokay Gecko was handed over to the Forest and Wildlife Department Imphal (Manipur) .
