The peace procession was organised by the Haflong Government College students in protest against the bandh culture in Dima Hasao. They also demanded stopping of attack on students, and appealed to the people to maintain peace and integrity in the district.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to Governor JB Patnaik, through the Deputy Commissioner, Dima Hasao district, urging him to direct the government to take stern action against law-breakers and to take effective measures to prevent repetition of such bandhs and demonstrations in the future for the sake of peace and tranquillity.
The Haflong Govt College Students’ Association on behalf of the students community of greater Haflong, submitted the memorandum in view of the recent violence and unrest created due to the bandh called by several lesser known organisations such as ISF (Indigenous Students’ Forum), IWF (Indigenous Women Forum), etc.
In the recent bandh the worst sufferer was the student community as the matriculation and HS examination were going on and as such ISF being a student organisation it was beyond their understanding to have called the bandh in such a time, hampering the morale of the students.
The memorandum urged the Governor to provide permanent security guards to both the Haflong Govt College Boys Hostel and Haflong Govt College Girls Hostel. Secondly, they also asked him to strengthen the law and order in Haflong as well as in the whole Dima Hasao district.
Their next demand was to stop road communication which passes through and within the Haflong Govt College campus, as the culprits of the March 1 incident escaped through the road which passes through Haflong Govt College campus. The road creates problems during the college hours, they said, urging him to take steps for immediate completion of the college gate as no construction had been done since a year and also to inquire into the delay.
