The five times world champion in boxing Mary Kom who is
an additional police superintendent in Manipur was warned for
supporting Ajay Maken who is contesting the forthcoming elections as a
Congress candidate.
In a letter sent to Mary Kom
through the chief electoral officer, Manipur Akshay Rout, director
general of the Election Commission of India, pointed out that when Ms.
Kom was engaged as a national icon for promoting voter participation it
was explained to her that she should desist from supporting or
associating with any candidate or affiliating to any political party.
The
Director General said that Ms. Kom had posted a Youtube video
supporting the Congress candidate. Later this message was broadcast in
some radio channels. The letter which was sent on Wednesday had given
Ms. Kom a chance to clarify her position. She was asked to desist from
such activities in future.
