3 Manipuri men assaulted in seperate cases

Three men from Manipur were assaulted in two separate incidents in south Delhi, police said Monday, on a day when autopsy report confirmed that Arunachal student Nido Tania died of injuries suffered at the hands of a group of assailants.

The latest reports of violence come at a time when the Northeastern community has been protesting against Tania’s death and the race abuse they suffer in the Capital.

While one of the men from the northeastern state of Manipur was assaulted by snatchers, the other incident on Sunday night is suspected to be triggered by racial slurs.

Out vegetable shopping, cousins Gin Khansuan Naulak, 24, and Vunsuanmung Naulak, 25, were beaten up with rods and bamboo sticks by some six unidentified bikers in Ambedkar Nagar market at around 9.30pm.

The beating, police sources said, came after the cousins snubbed questions about their race and ethnicity. Three local ruffians were arrested on Monday, police said.
Two juveniles were also involved in the assault and were detained.

“Last night, when my friend and I went out to buy vegetables, two—three people came from behind and provoked us,” Gin Khansuan told HT. They tried to resist them but were outnumbered.

Gin was hit on the face and his ear started bleeding. “I fell down and was semi-conscious. My cousin was hit on the neck and back,” he said. The group then fled on their bikes.

Both the men were taken to AIIMS, where Vunsuanmung was discharged after first aid while Gin was still under treatment at the Trauma Centre. “One of them had injuries in his left ear. He is under observation and is stable now,” a senior doctor said. Gin has been given stitches to the ear and has light bruises all over his body.

In nearby Nizamuddin, 20-year-old Manipuri student Vosomo Phong Sore was robbed when he was going to get his phone recharged. Four drug addicts, who frequented the locality, have been arrested with the phone.
