Human Rights awareness campaign held at Parbung

Parbung (ChurachandPur), August 6 : 'Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled.

They are not given to us by someone.

If any of the rights are violated, the Manipur Human Rights Commission may be approached,' said the MHRC member, Ng Nongyai.

Ng Nongyai was speaking as the chief guest at the Human Rights Awareness Campaign held at Parbung village in Churachandpur district on August 3.The awareness programme was organised by the MHRC.

Stressing on the importance of Right to Environment, Nongyai called the people to protect the forests in order to preserve the environment.

As a human, people need proper communication.

He said road communication in Parbung and its adjoining villages need to be improved.

Nongyai also assured to press the government authority to provide proper connectivity in the area, especially between Jiribam and Tipaimukh.

Speaking as a resource person on the occasion, Advocate Tondon said there is no significance of living without enjoying human rights.

Among the rights, right to life, civil and political rights are important.

These rights have also been enshrined in the Constitution as Fundamental rights.

It is important to know the rights to ensure whether the rights are violated.

The awareness campaign at Parbung under Tipaimukh Assembly constituency in Churachandpur district was also graced by SDO of Parbung, Y Dimajit; SDO of Thanlon subdivision, Khuplen Lhouvum; chairman of Parbung village authority, Ngurneichung; and secretary of Parbung VA, Lalenglien as the president and guests of honour respectively.

Earlier the human rights awareness campaign, the team led by the member of MHRC, Ng Nongyai had also visited the confluence of Tuivai and Barak rivers where the Tipaimukh dam is proposed to be built.

Talking to reporters at the site, Nongyai said even as the government of India is all set for the construction of Tipaimukh dam, several organisations of Manipur are stiffly opposing the construction.

He said the MHRC will closely watch whether the guidelines laid down by the UN and the Supreme Court in this regard are followed.

Advocate Tondon also expressed his desires that the government doesn't violate the right to life of the people inhabiting the area and the right to ecology.
