Guwahati: A young woman attacked and threw stones at an army soldier after he allegedly tried to molest her at Haflong in Assam's North Cachar Hills district, official sources said here today.
Lance Naik Gurvinder Singh of the army's 8th Battalion of the SikhRegiment visited a garment shop owned by the woman, Rali Faihriem, in the heart of Haflong town on Wednesday.
Singh, who was in uniform, asked Faihrien to show him some underwear, but while she was doing so he allegedly made advances at her, the sources said.
Faihrien then pulled him out of the shop and threw stones at him in public with the local people and other army personnel having to rescue him, they said.
The woman later filed a first information report with the police. The army, too, has ordered an inquiry into the incident, the sources added.
The army had been deployed in trouble-torn North Cachar Hills district for counter-insurgency operations following large-scale violence by the extremist Dima Halam Daoga (Jewel).
