Kuki militant group lifts ban on Congress

IMPHAL: An umbrella organization of five Kuki militant outfits, which are signatories of the ongoing Suspension of Operation (Soo) with the government, has lifted its ban on Congress in Outer Manipur constituency.

The ruling Congress has fielded its sitting MP Thangso Baite for the Outer seat that will go to the polls on Wednesday. Altogether 23 Kuki militant groups under two apex committees - Kuki National Organization (KNO) and United People's Front (UPF) - are Soo signatories. The UPF, an apex body of five outfits, has said it has withdrawn its decision, made in June last year, to boycott Congress candidate in Outer Manipur if the government fails to begin political dialogue before the LS polls. A decision to this effect was adopted in a meeting held in March this year in which the reports submitted by UPF delegates, who met leaders at the Centre and the state in February, were also reviewed, said a statement issued by its information secretary Robinson Chongloi. On the other hand, the election department officials have done all that was required to ensure smooth conduct of the election to the Outer Manipur constituency and adequate polling and security personnel have been deployed. Ten candidates are in the fray for the Outer Manipur constituency that covers the hill districts of Senapati, Chandel, Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Churachandpur and parts of Thoubal valley and Imphal East districts.
