Shillong, Feb 21 :
A three-day Northeast philatelic exhibition to be held in Shillong from February 27 will showcase nearly 1,000 exhibits. Six special covers on Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura will be released on the occasion, the chief postmaster general, Northeast postal circle, P.T.S. Kumar told reporters today.

The exhibition, to be held at All Saints Cathedral Hall, Shillong, will demonstrate the cultural and educational values of philately and its popularity as a hobby, Kumar said.
He said he would make efforts to release more postal stamps from the Northeast as there were only a few at present.
He said the youths would immensely benefit from the exhibition, which will be inaugurated by Meghalaya governor R.S. Mooshahary.
Participation from the six states of the Northeast postal circle comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura is expected during the exhibition.
The exhibition will have competitions in eight categories like traditional philately, postal history, postal stationary, thematic philately, first day covers and special covers, modern philately and one frame exhibits. Kumar said the postal circle has received nearly 1,000 exhibits from the states under the circle.
According to Kumar, this is an opportunity to generate interest in philately among the youth.
“There will also be a competition on letter writing and stamp design besides a school-level quiz competition,” he said. The exhibition will have a separate section for participants of 11 to 18 years to display their collections.
The organisers have also made arrangements for transportation of students from schools to the venue.
DGP meet
Meghalaya DGP N. Ramachandran today met police officials in Tura, West Garo Hills, to discuss the need to strengthen the anti-insurgency operations in Garo hills.
Official sources today said soon after the departure of Union home minister P. Chidambaram yesterday, the DGP rushed to Tura to assess the law and order situation.
During the meeting yesterday, the home minister had asked the police forces to go hard on the GNLA to neutralise the militant outfit at the earliest.
Sources said in an informal meeting with the police officials today, the DGP also conveyed the message of the home minister that action should be taken against the sympathisers, financiers and overground workers of GNLA since it was declared a terrorist outfit on January 12.
