Students stage march for Sadar Hills district

IMPHAL, Oct 16 – Thousands of students from 20 schools on Friday staged a protest march to demand “immediate upgradation of Sadar Hills to a full-fledged district”.

The rally, which was organised by Sadar Hills Private Schools’ Association (SHIPS) under the banner, “We want immediate inauguration of Sadar Hill as full- fledged district”, was started from Thomas Ground, Kangpokpi and culminated at the office of the Additional DC, Autonomous District Council (ADC). They later submitted a memorandom addressed to Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh through the SDC in-charge.

Sadar Hills Private Schools’ Association president Pagin Kipgen said: “The student community and the Association have no inclination to involve in politics yet we staged a protest rally related with political issue.”

“We are not involved in politics in anyway but the disturbed situation has compelled us to get involved.”

The Sadar Hills Private Schools’ Association feels itself constrained to highlight the plight of the people in the backdrop of the economic blockade imposed by the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee since August 1, with a humble appeal to ameliorate the sufferings of the citizens, stated the memorandum submitted to Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh yesterday.

“Why cannot the present Government settle the Sadar Hills issue as it has time and again confirmed that the demand for Sadar Hills is a genuine demand”, asserted the memorandum.
