The day is observed as 'black day' every year by organisastions like the Coordination Committee of seven militant groups like KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, UNLF and UPPK. These organisations had declared October 15 as 'National Black Day' and imposed general strike from midnight last night till 1730 hours today.
Security was beefed up and large numbers of personnel were posted across the state since last night to avert any untoward incident.
All inter and intra state passenger bus services were cancelled.
Educational institutes and business establishments, oil depots and gas agencies were closed. Government offices were manned by a skeletal staff. Streets were deserted and children were seen playing on the roads.
The Co-ordination Committee of the seven groups said the day is observed as 'black day' as the Manipur King was forced to sign the 'Merger Agreement' on September 21, 1949 and Manipur was 'annexed' on October 15, 1949.
