Hindi-speaking trader shot at in Dima Hasao

SILCHAR: After a lull of a few months, militancy returns in Assam's once-troubled Dima Hasao district with suspected rebels shooting at a Hindi-speaking trader in the industrial township of Umrangshu, 120 km from Haflong, the district headquarters, on Friday night.

A senior police officer on Saturday said Giridhari Sahu, 58, was returning home from his shop at Umrangshu town at 9 pm on Friday. Four youths, with faces covered, attacked him and fired from their pistols near his home. They fled the spot almost immediately.

Soon after, members of Sahu's family and neighbours found Sahu him bleeding profusely with marks of bullets on his body. Police too rushed to the place after being alerted about the incident. He was soon taken to Umrangshu civil hospital from where doctors referred him to Guwahati Medical Collage and Hospital. A critically-injured Sahu has been undergoing treatment at the GMCH, police said.

Sahu, who is a native of Bihar, is an affluent trader of the town and has a grocery shop there.

Soon after the incident, police launched a haunt in the area. But there's no report of any arrest till now. Police is also in the dark about the group of militants involved in the incident, particularly after surrender of almost all the major group of militants in the district.

Sources, however, said Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT), a Karbi Anglong-based militant outfit has been active in this part of neighbouring Dima Hasao district for past few months.

Peace returned in the district after the surrender of Dima Halam Daoga (Jewel) on October 2, 2009 and later surrender of all cadres of Dima National Democratic Front (DNDF) on August 3 this year.
