In the first wave of flood of this season in Barak Valley area of Assam, at least 50 villages were inundated in Karimganj district. The flood caused heavy damage to paddy cultivation, besides human habitation.

Offcial sources here today said incessant rain for past few days caused swelling of Singla and Longai rivers in the district.

This caused breach of flood control dykes in a total of six places. Officials said the flood water of the both rivers inundated nearly 50 villages spreading across Ratabari, Patharkandi and Nilambazar circles of the district bordering Bangladesh.

Nearly 30,000 people have been affected by the flood in the areas in question, said the official. Circle officer Biresh Chandra Nath said paddy cultivation has largely been damaged in the areas.

He said officials are busy estimating the extent of damage.
