Centre clears 229 urban projects for North East

Shillong, Jul 7: The Union Ministry of Urban Development has approved a total of 229 urban developmental projects in the North Eastern region, an official statement said today.

An amount of Rs 1233.31 crore has been released for the developmental projects of Rs 1893.79 crore projects estimated at the cost for 2010-11, the statement said.

Of the 229 projects, 112 have been completed in the states such as 54 projects in Arunachal Pradesh, 49 projects in Nagaland, 33 in Assam, 24 in Sikkim, 19 in Manipur, 17 in Mizoram, 17 in Tripura and 16 in Meghalaya.

These projects cover a wide variety of urban infrastructure, the statement said, adding that ten per cent of the annual plan budget of the ministry is earmarked for implementation of projects for the region.

The scheme of 10 per cent lumpsum provision for the North Eastern region became operational in the Ministry of Urban Development from the year 2001-02.

It is now under implementation as per guidelines of Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources and instructions issued by the Ministry, where the assistance released from the pool, is tied with the project.
