The awards were announced earlier by the ministry for development of northeastern region (DoNER).
A release issued by the DoNER ministry stated that the sportspersons selected for the awards are Somdev Kishore Dev Barman (Tripura), Jayanta Talukdar (Assam), M. Suranjoy Singh (Manipur), Y. Renubala (Manipur), L. Bombayala Devi (Manipur), N.G. Sonia (Manipur), Kh. Bheigyabati (Manipur), A. Sandhyarani (Manipur), L. Monica (Manipur), W. Sandhyarani (Manipur), M. Bimoljit (Manipur) and M.C Mary Kom (Manipur).
The awards for Olympic Games are Rs 40 lakh, Rs 20 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for gold, silver and bronze winners respectively. For Asian/Commonwealth Games, the awards are Rs 10 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh for gold, silver and bronze medal winners respectively and Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh for gold, silver and bronze winners respectively for National Games.
While Somdev will be receiving Rs 33 lakh for his gold in the recent Commonwealth Games and two gold and a bronze in the Asian Games, Jayanta will be awarded Rs 9 lakh for his two bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games and another in the Asian Games. M. Suranjoy will be awarded Rs 13 lakh for his one gold and one bronze in the Commonwealth and Asian Games. Y. Renubala and L. Bombayala Devi will receive Rs 10 lakh each for gold in their respective disciplines in the Commonwealth Games. Sonia and W. Sandhyarani will each get Rs 5 lakh. Kh. Bheigyabati, Mary Kom, A. Sandhyarani, L. Monica, Bimoljit will get Rs 3 lakh each.
