"The DHD(J) militants have come out of their designated camps and are campaigning for the Congress in various parts of Dima Hasao district," said Kulendra Daulagupu, the BJP's candidate for the same constituency. "I have sent a complaint to the Election Commission and described the entire situation in the constituency. Whatever is happening is in gross violation of the surrender groundrules set for the DHD (J) rebels," he told newspersons.
The DHD(J) rebels, also known as Black Widow militants, had laid down their arms on October 2, 2009 and started living in five designated camps across the district. "Surrendered militants cannot come out of their designated camps and support or oppose any party or any candidate. But the DHD(J) militants are roaming across villages and threatening the gaonburahs to make it sure that the voters favour Langthasa," said Daulagupu. "It has become evident that the Congress has links with the surrendered militant outfit. The EC should take necessary action so that voters are not influenced by the rebels," he added. Haflong goes to the poll in the first phase on Monday.
