China Dam 'nothing alarmist': Salman Khurshid

Shillong, Apr 5 : Stating that there is 'nothing alarmist' on China's plans to set up a dam on the Brahmaputra river, Union Minister Salman Kursheed today asked India to keep eyes open and be careful.

"It is true that people are often worried about the impact of what the Chinese would do on the Brahmaputra, but information available with the government is not indicative of any concern," Mr Khurshid said.

The Water Resources Minister said after inaugurating a three-day workshop on water resources management in North East with special reference to flood.

The Chinese government, he said have told Indian authorities that there is diversion of water from the Brahmaputra (Tsangpo in China), but they have a minor river run-off the water project which does not take any water away.

"They (China) have given us an assurance from time to time, but we have to keep our eyes open and be careful," Mr Khurshid said.

Stating that almost 80 per cent of water flowing in Brahmaputra comes from the Indian territory, the senior Congress legislator said, "we need to store some water on the Brahmaputra. we will have to see what we can do on our side to insure some water storage and to address the flood issues." Earlier, speaking at the inaugural function of the workshop, Mr Khurshid said flood is a major concern for the Northeast and northern states, particularly on the rivers that flows from Nepal.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who also spoke on the function urged upon the Water Resources Minister to consider establishing state unit of Brahmaputra Board in all states of the region.
