The Committee of Tribal Areas of Manipur (Coptam) submitted a memorandum to the President during her two-day visit to the state that wrapped up on Saturday.
"Our future is threatened and unless you show your concern to our plight, there is the danger of us being swamped and reduced to the plight of the tribals in Tripura", said the memorandum.
According to Coptam, the memorandum was necessitated as the state government has threatened the existence of the indigenous tribals, their unique way of life, self-governance, age-old practices, modern aspirations, peace, education and development. Meanwhile, chairperson of Manipur's women's development corporation AK Mirabai highlighted the insurgency issue besetting the state as well as Irom Sharmila Chanu's unrelenting campaign against the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
While interacting with the President at Raj Bhawan on Saturday morning, Mirabai said other than a political solution, there was no means to end the decades-old insurgency problem in Manipur.
Merabai said the President was fully aware of Shramila's struggle and her determination as well. An eight-point memorandum, highlighting important issues on development of women in the state, was also submitted to the President during the meeting, she said.
Chairperson of Manipur state social welfare advisory board RK Nayansana, who also called on the President, too raised various issues concerning the state to her.
