The rally was organized by the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), an apex body of the Tangkhul students. A memorandum has also been handed over to the DC to be forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi.
Thousands of people joined today’s rally at Ukhrul town, the district headquarter, beginning from 11.30 am and concluded at 1.30 in the afternoon. The rally was started from Hundung Junction to Kharasom Junction converging at TKS campus followed by a public meeting at the same location.
The memo sought the immediate intervention of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in respect of Mapithel Dam (Thoubal multi-purpose) Project and Tipaimukh Dam Project and mega-dam constructions in the Northeast India in general.
It was stated that the ongoing construction of Mapithel Dam without proper rehabilitation and settlement programmes clearly shows disregard for the voice of the affected people.
On the Tipaimukh Hydro Project, the memo said that in spite of opposition to the construction from its very conception, the project has been passed through without ‘people’s free, prior and informed consent’.
