Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC) has called a 48-hour bandh on the national highways in the 'Naga areas' of Manipur from Tuesday midnight (June 16) intensifying its long-standing demand for an Alternative Arrangement (AA) for the Nagas.
The seventh round of tripartite talks on the Alternative Arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur outside the purview of the state government was held on February 6, 2014, in Senapati.
The UNC has maintained that the state has failed to protect the Nagas' land and preserve its history and culture.
Resenting the delay in meeting the demands, the UNC has called the 48-hour strike on the national highways in the Naga areas, read the statement signed by UNC information and publicity secretary S Milan.
It has asked other Naga frontal organizations and tribal bodies to make the strike a success in their respective areas.
The Nagas in Manipur had convened the Third Naga Peoples' Convention on July 1, 2010, to discuss ways to protect their land and preserve their heritage. It was decided that all political ties with the state government would be severed, the statement added. The demand was registered by the then PM and the first round of tripartite talks was held on September 21, 2010, in New Delhi, it added.
Again, the UNC had in August last year clamped a 10-day ban on construction activities of all the national projects, including the time-bound Trans Asian railways project and national highways in the state.
