Manipur government has started the process of acquisition of land for establishing a national sports university in Thoubal district, officials said on Tuesday.
The Revenue Department would acquire 68.25 acres of land at Yaithibi Loukon in the district for the purpose, added officials.
The state cabinet had earlier decided to acquire land through direct
purchase and negotiations were on to buy the land from private land
owners.
Some 300 villagers, however, strongly opposed the acquisition as the
land was fertile and urged the government to shift the proposed
university to some other place, concluded officials.
