Imphal, Feb 4 : The Tipaimukh Dam, proposed to be constructed in Manipur, has been objected by various organisations from within the country and Bangladesh for environmental factors.
Committee on Land and Natural Resources (COLNAR) Convenor Kinderson Pamei said Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh might meet all stakeholder companies today for initialising the work on the controversial Tipaimukh Dam.
It was contended that people’s concerns and apprehensions were not addressed and the committee demanded total scrapping of Tipaimukh Mega Dam Project.
The controversial project to be constructed over the Barak river of Manipur, bordering Mizoram and Assam, was initially designed to contain flood water in Assam. It was, however, rejected twice by the Manipur Legislative Assembly for the region being seismologically sensitive with environmental hazard, rehabilitation and resettlement being extremely inadequate.
Till date, the confidence of the Assembly and all the communities, both from up and down stream, have not taken into consideration, Mr Pamei added.
Governor in Council had given a ground clearance to sign an MoU between the Manipur government and Northeastern Electric Power Corporation Limited which was signed on January nine,2003, notwithstanding people’s repeated call for respect of their right to participate in all decision-making process of the project.
