Australians lead fight to build billion-dollar weather network

Harris says it's close to a deal

Australian computer company Harris claims it is close to securing a billion-dollar contract to build a next-generation weather-data computer network for the US government.

According to the Orlando Sentinel , the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wants a ground-based computer network that will serve the agency's next-generation weather-satellite constellation.

Harris is competing with Raytheon for the contract to build the network, which will operate, control and process the satellite data. The decade-long contract will be awarded this spring.

In December, NOAA awarded the satellite-manufacturing portion of the GOES-R programme to Lockheed Martin's space-systems division. The first launch of the new satellite constellation is scheduled for 2015
